Objectifs du cours:

- Provide an evidence based rationale for a rehabilitation approach aimed at restoring the control and coordination of the trunk muscles.
- Develop clinical skill of assessment and rehabilitation of the trunk muscles for patients with acute and chronic low back and pelvic pain and provide guidelines for progression of exercise from the initial assessment to discharge from rehabilitation.
- Provide theoretical framework to facilitate communication and discussion of the approach with patients and peers.
- An improved understanding of the mechanics and pathomechanics of the shoulder in throwing sports, swimming and tennis
- Greater information about and skill in evaluation of injuries of the glenoid labrum and assessment of passive stability of the glenohumeral joint
- Knowledge of a simple, accurate and reliable method of assessment of glenohumeral retrotorsion and its implications for injury to and management of the shoulder of the overhead athlete.
- Knowledge of and some practical skill in evaluation of the injured shoulder in the athlete and how to integrate the findings from that evaluation into management
- Knowledge of and practical skills in a biomechanically optimal throwing technique
- Consider Sackett et al’s (2000) definition of evidence-based practice (‘The integration of best research evidence, clinical expertise and patient values’) and focus on how one can develop clinical expertise while integrating the best research evidence into clinical practice
- Use multiple case studies and an interactive group discussion format to journey through the body to clarify through clinical reasoning how to
- get the most from the subjective examination
- determine which tests to use in your objective examination (learn to triage on the spot)
- prioritize your treatment plan based on sound clinical reasoning skills that are patient specific (address the patient values) and not condition based
- determine optimal clinical outcomes.
- Learn to become a "reflective" practitioner, skilled in deductive reasoning
- To introduce the concept of clinical reasoning and models of health and disability, using the shoulder complex as an example
- To present a summary of the anatomical and biomechanical features of the shoulder relevant to clinical presentation of impingement and instability
- To revise routine clinical examination procedures for the shoulder complex and introduce advanced examination procedures.
- To introduce a concept of, and present one approach to, evaluation and management of dynamic control of the shoulder complex
- To provide participants with a comprehensive workbook containing extensive contemporary information on clinical reasoning and shoulder anatomy, biomechanics and clinical patterns, assessment and management strategies

Paul Hodges is a Professor and NHMRC Principal Research Fellow in the Division of Physiotherapy at the University of Queensland and Co-Director of the NHMRC Centre of Clinical Research Excellence in Spinal Pain, Injury and Health. Paul has doctorates in both physiotherapy and neuroscience and his work blends neurophysiological and biomechanical methods to understand the control of movement and stability and how this changes when people have pain.
